In the framework of its Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies Panel, The European Food Safety Authority has published opinions about dietary reference values for the nutrients intake with conclusions on total carbohydrates, sugars, dietary fibres, fats, saturated fats and trans fats, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and water.

This work has been carried out by the Panel, following the demand of the European Commission to update the first advice on dietary reference values (DRVs) first set out in 1993.

EFSA is currently preparing advice on protein and energy and will start its work on vitamins and minerals later in 2010.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is the keystone of European Union (EU) risk assessment regarding food and feed safety. In close collaboration with national authorities and in open consultation with its stakeholders, EFSA provides independent scientific advice and clear communication on existing and emerging risks.

CRIOC (Centre de Recherche et d’Information des Organisations de Consommateurs – Research and Information Center for Consumers’ Organizations)

Located in Belgium, CRIOC has just released the results of a study carried out between March and July, with 1,308 adults, regarding the nutrition information available to consumers – or information they think are available.
Were discussed among others topics: weight perception, perception, memories, the interest and impact of nutritional and sanitary landmarks.

In its conclusions, CRIOC highlights consumers’ interest for nutritional information but their poor knowledge on the matter, and thus expresses different recommendations for public authorities including the implementation of specific actions targeting groups at risk in order to raise their awareness in terms of nutrition.

The FOOD project thus sees its interest reinforced by such a study which is both completely external and independent from the program.
