FOOD presented at the International Consultation on Healthy Workplaces organised by the WHO

Last December 10-12th, 2012 in Rome, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) jointly organised the Second International Consultation on Healthy Workplaces.

The FOOD programme was presented during the first session of the Consultation, in the workshop dedicated to “Enterprises-Community involvement”. This was a major opportunity for the Programme to be disseminated at International scale as a best practice.

The WHO global framework on healthy workplaces aims at enabling enterprises and organisations to develop and implement comprehensive health programmes to protect and promote the health of their workers and the surrounding communities. The implementation of this framework stimulated various initiatives in many countries and worksites across regions and showed the need for practical guidance on the development and implementation of healthy workplace programmes in the different contexts. The first international consultation on implementing healthy workplace programmes was organized by WHO in 2011 in New Delhi.

Aims of the Second International Consultation on Healthy Workplaces:

  • Reviewing good practices in using healthy workplace programmes for prevention and control of non-communicable diseases and for promotion of mental health
  • Identifying opportunities for the contribution of healthy workplace programmes to sustainable development
  • Developing policy options for governments and national health agencies to stimulate the development of healthy workplace initiatives
  • Strengthening awareness and raising and advocacy for healthy workplaces
